Satcom1's Short Messaging Service (SMS) makes it possible for users to send a SMS from their Inmarsat C terminal to virtually anyone with a GSM mobile phone. SMS messages are routed via the Land Earth Station (LES) and sent automatically. SMS is currently available only in the mobile-to-fixed direction.
How to send a SMS from an Inmarsat-C terminal to a GSM subscriber:
Sending a SMS message from an Inmarsat-C terminal is as easy as sending an e-mail from the office. There are no Internet connections or additional software required. In the body of the message (text field), enter the country code (without 00) and the telephone number of the recipient followed by a <#> sign. Compose the message and send it using the two-digit special access code 66. The telephone number and start of the text must be in the first line of the message. Both 5-bit (telex) and 7-bit (text) formats can be used. SMS messages are limited to a total of 160 characters (excluding the country code and telephone number). If the body of the Inmarsat-C message is greater than 160 characters, it will be automatically split into two or more SMS messages.
